Common Training-Related Scenarios
Read the questions below for guidance.
Are you working with mice?
You will need to complete Species-Specific Training - Mouse. Sign up for the next available class in WorkSafe. If the available classes are full, sign up for the DLAM Rat Class Queue/Waitlist on WorkSafe. We use this pretend class to track your request for the mouse class. There is no class scheduled on the date and time of the queue/waitlist; however, DLAM Training will email you and offer priority enrollment in any additional classes. Look for this class listed on the last day of each month.
Be sure to complete
- The Trainer must see this completion certificate before class starts.
- You can print out the certificate and bring it with you or show it on your mobile device.
Are you working with rats?
You will need to complete Species-Specific Training - Rat. Sign up in WorkSafe for the next available class. If the available courses are full, sign up for the DLAM Mouse Class Queue/Waitlist on WorkSafe. We will use this pretend class to track your request for rat class. There is no class on the date/time of the queue/waitlist, but DLAM Training will email you and give you priority enrollment in all added classes. Look for this class listed on the last day of the month.
Be sure to complete
- MHQ
- CITI Training's General Certification Test
- CITI Training's "Working with rats in a research setting"
- The Trainer will need to see this completion certificate before class starts.
- You can print out the certificate and bring it with you or show it on your mobile device.
Are you working with a species other than rats and mice?
Please email DLAMTraining@mednet.ucla.edu with the following information:
- Name
- UID (university ID)
- PI name
- Species of animal
DLAM Training will send more information about signing up for the Species-Specific class you will need.
Are you involved in survival surgery with mice or rats?
You will need to complete Aseptic Techniques - Rodent. Sign up in WorkSafe for the next available class. If the available courses are full, sign up for the DLAM Rodent Aseptic Queue/Waitlist on WorkSafe. We use this pretend class to track your request for an aseptic class. There is no class on the date/time of the queue/waitlist, but DLAM Training will email you and give you priority enrollment in all added classes. Look for this class listed on the last day of the month.
PLEASE ONLY enroll in the Aseptic Techniques class if you are involved in survival surgery in mice or rats. If you are involved in a surgery with rats/mice and the animal is euthanized at the end of the procedure, you do not need an Aseptic Techniques class. If your lab does surgery, but you will not be helping prepare/monitor/recover the animal for surgery, you do not need this class. If you are unsure, DLAMTraining@mednet.ucla.edu will help you check the protocol, discuss your role in the surgery, and see if the class is needed.
Be sure to complete CITI Training (Citiprogram.org) ‘Aseptic Techniques’ before attending the Aseptic class in person.
- The Trainer will need to see the completion certificate before class starts.
- You can print it out and bring it or show it on your mobile device.
Are you involved in survival surgery on an animal that is NOT a rat or mouse?
- Please do not take the Aseptic Techniques – Rodent course. The regulations covered in the rodent class will not apply to the surgical procedures you are involved in with other species.
- Please email DLAMTraining@mednet.ucla.edu and provide the following information:
- Name
- UID (university ID)
- PI name
- Species of animal
- DLAM Training will send you more information about signing up for the species-specific Aseptic Techniques class you will need.
Are you ready to complete the DLAM Walkthrough?
You only need the walkthrough of the area(s) where your lab’s animals will be housed.
UCLA has several housing sites for mice and rats.
Please note that walkthroughs are the last step in your training.
For more information, refer to the question tabs: Are you requesting a walkthrough in Hazard Containment?
Are you requesting a walkthrough in Hazard Containment?
If you are Not Sure?
The PI or Lab Manager may know this information.
DLAM Training can also help you find it. Please email DLAMTraining@mednet.ucla.edu.
If the animal area is NOT Hazard Containment:
- Please complete ‘DLAM Rodent Facility Access Training’ on WorkSafe
- Please complete ‘DLAM Cage Side Communication Cards’ on WorkSafe
- Ensure that your MHQ is up to date (mhq.healthsciences.ucla.edu)
- Complete the Species-Specific Training for Mice and/or Rats.
- Ensure that you are listed on the ARC protocol (Protocol needs to be at least submitted for approval, and list the walkthrough areas as housing locations)
- If the walkthrough concerns DLAM Core rodent areas, please sign up on the WorkSafe website and choose the corresponding course for the facilities you plan to access.
- If the walkthrough is for rodent areas not yet listed in WorkSafe, please email DLAMTraining@mednet.ucla.edu to schedule these walkthroughs.
- If you work with species other than rats or mice, you will receive your walkthrough when you get your species-specific training, so you do not need to sign up for a walkthrough separately.
If the animal area is Hazard Containment?
- Please complete ‘DLAM Hazard Containment Facility Training’ on WorkSafe.
- Please complete ‘DLAM Cage Side Communication Cards’ on WorkSafe
- Ensure that your MHQ is up to date (mhq.healthsciences.ucla.edu)
- Complete the Species-Specific Training for mice and/or rats.
- Ensure that you are listed on the ARC protocol that has been submitted for approval.
- Ensure you have completed all required EH&S classes below (Available on WorkSafe)
- Biosafety Fundamentals: BSL2 and BSL2+ (BSL2)
